What is the Metacrisis?

Many of us feel it. A nagging uncertainty as we look at our complex, hyper-globalised world.

We seem to be at the brink of multiple tipping points and boundaries – a growing set of challenges involving the environment, technology, geopolitics, health, inequality, economics, and more.

What if there are connections between all these things?

The metacrisis is an analysis of the underlying drivers of the multiple challenges we face.

When we can understand the root causes, rather than focusing only on visible symptoms, we are able to act differently. We can change the way we change things – as individuals, organisations, and as communities.

If you are new to the metacrisis, we run a free introductory session that explains the core ideas.

What is the Metacrisis?

2-hour workshop.

Online, free, and all are welcome.

The workshop looks at the metacrisis through four key themes.

1 :: Humans

We are fundamentally different to the other species we share the planet with.

Only humans have the power to influence things on a global scale.

  • Why are we the way we are?
  • Does our power come with responsibilities?

2 :: Stories

As humans, we have ways of explaining how the world works.

Sometimes these are myth, and sometimes they are fact.

  • What ideas are currently dominant?
  • Are they based on fact, or on myth?

3 :: Resources

Everything we do depends on the resources around us – nothing comes from nowhere.

We are also reliant on resources from every corner of the globe.

  • Do we properly account for our resource use?
  • In what ways are we ‘resource blind’?

4 :: Incentives

Our current system is built in a particular way, and rewards certain types of behaviour.

These underlying incentives lead to a particular set of outcomes.

  • What drives the decisions we make?
  • What are the consequences of those decisions?
